Wednesday Whine: This n That

woman-drinking-beer-2After several weeks of holiday cheer, I’m ready to cut back a little. Anyone willing to settle for a light beer this Wednesday evening?

My husband frowns when I drink light beer. He says it’s a sissy beer, that it’s basically water and yellow food coloring. The man’s a purist! Well, given my druthers, I’d much rather have a glass of wine, but perhaps it’s time to watch the calories – even if it’s just for this Wednesday.

So, here we are, the first Wednesday into the new year. How are those resolutions holding up?

Many people have given up making them and I can understand why. Watching resolutions fall by the wayside after a few weeks gets tiresome. Especially those that are perennial favorites: losing those extra pounds that stubbornly refuse to budge; working out every day, come hell or high water; tracking your word count; committing to reading a certain number of books. Ahem! Just to name a few…images (6)

As weeks go by, resolutions become less motivating and more guilt inducing.

Still, there is something about a new year that is invigorating. We think that this is the year things will be different. We human beings are such optimists!

If you’re the resolving type, let me know how yours are going. I’m holding to most of mine – so far!

Last year I made a resolution to track word count. That lasted about three months. A lot of my writing undergoes significant revision. When I was writing a lot of five-hundred word stories, my first drafts always ended up two- to four-hundred words above the word count. Then I had to figure out what to excise while still keeping intact the heart of the story. I agonized over the amount of time spent on revisions, and whether or even how to account for them on my spreadsheet. I was spending time writing and revising stories and projects… how do you track that?

I came up with an arbitrary formula, used it for a while, but never felt good about it. It was making me crazy! So I jettisoned the formula. I also jettisoned tracking word count. In the end, I figure if I’m posting on my blog and writing almost daily, that’s good enough. After all, I’m a writer – not an accountant!

imagesPAAXVVNM

So that was a failed resolution for 2014, and one that didn’t make the list for 2015.

As for the extra pounds, let’s not talk too much about that. Let’s just say that the pesky ‘eat less / exercise more’ resolution continues to be ‘an oldie but a goodie,’ as they say in the music industry.

One resolution I did keep was to read forty books in 2014. Actually, I read more than forty. In addition to completing my Goodreads’ challenge, I also read manuscripts from two fellow bloggers who are authors. I was honored both authors asked me to read their work, and I’m looking forward to seeing the manuscripts in published form.

The Goodreads’ challenge was such fun that I’ve upped the number of books I’ll read in 2015. If any of you are on Goodreads, please look me for me. I’d love to be friends with you! I’m always interested in what others are reading. And authors, I’m especially interested in what you’re reading and writing – so, don’t be a stranger.

As for New Year’s Eve, we had a quiet dinner at a restaurant. Then we came home to the sound of fireworks, and general chaos as our dachshunds went crazy at the sounds made by revelers. They loved it – it offered them an excuse to run about the house in a barking frenzy.

imagesPJ4UI84EThis past Saturday night, Ravens fans had the pleasure of watching their team defeat the fearsome Pittsburgh Steelers. Nothing is more fun than watching a match-up between these two teams, and the rivalry between Baltimore and Pittsburgh is one of the best in the country. I must admit, I didn’t think my boys in purple were going to defeat the Steelers, a team that seemed to have a lot of momentum.

But miracles happen! The Ravens played very well. And, now it’s on to New England! Please indulge a former Baltimore native this one time as she enthusiastically shouts: GO RAVENS!

On Tuesday, we experienced our first all-day snow event for 2015. The temperatures were below freezing and the snow was wet and heavy. Even so, we only received about three inches of the stuff. Just enough to make driving hazardous, especially in the morning. Winter – I am so not a fan. Give me sandy beaches and sunshine – how did I end up in Pennsylvania?

About the only members of my household who actually enjoy winter are my dogs. imagesO420JBTXThey love snow. What could be more fun than rolling around in it, and then tracking it inside the house? This sort of behavior from animals who hate going outside when it’s raining puzzles me. Why is snow so different?

It will take more than one light beer for me to figure that one out. Instead, perhaps I better get to work on those extra pounds I mentioned earlier. I hope I can still find the treadmill. It’s sitting somewhere in the basement… buried under cartons of old books – not to mention cobwebs.

  1. Enjoyed the update, K. =)

  2. Thankfully, we haven’t had any snow yet where I live in the UK, but it January when we usually fall foul of the wintry weather.

I haven’t made any resolutions this year unless being happy and trying to be good to myself can be counted. 🙂

As for the Goodreads challenge, I fell short by about 8 books, but considering how long some of the books were that I did read I don’t think I made a bad fist of it on the whole. I have reduced my challenge total to 30 books, which should be achievable 🙂

    Another great post, Kate! ❤

    • Kate Loveton says:

I’m glad to hear your resolution is to be good to yourself. You are awfully good to others; it’s time to take time for you and do what make YOU happy. Kudos, dear Heather!

You did read some very lengthy books this year! Coupled with blogging, writing and a heavy workload, getting through the number of books you did this year was pretty amazing. ❤

      • Thanks Kate ❤

I am trying very hard to do what makes me happy but it's very hard to break the habit of a lifetime. I guess practice will make perfect in the end!

In fact, this past Wednesday I had a day off and spent it lounging around and relaxing and trying not to feel guilty about not doing very much! 🙂

I have lowered my book challenge total this year as I missed last year's total by only a couple of titles. Last year seems to have flown past me in a blur but I am hoping that I will be better able to keep my focus this year.

  3. Hi Kate! I like Bud Lite and friends who are craft beer snobs consider this a weakness in my character. Let them. 😉 I like to reflect how the year went and elect goals for improving myself for the next, but I get guilt-ridden to easily, and I think resolutions become counter-productive.

    • Kate Loveton says:

So we can go out together, Cindy, and share a lite beer and feel pretty darned good about it! 😀 Then we’ll head to the movie house where they play old movies – maybe weep our way through an old Bette Davis movie.

I think too many resolutions can be counter-productive. I’ll be happy to just keep to two of them!

  4. Stephen Thom says:

what is the spreadsheet for? are the 500 word stories for online challenge-type things? it does sound a bit reductive to autopsy some stories for a set word count. i kinda do this sometimes too because don’t want things to be too long to put online. but more 1500/2000 bracket. i suppose some stories should be as long as they need to be, like it’s always more about where certain plot points fall than number of words.

i will go and stalk you on goodreads now! i dont really do resolutions 🙂 but on 24th jan ill not have had a drink in 3 years 🙂 so i suppose that counts as an ongoing one 🙂 haha, shh.

    • Kate Loveton says:

Hi Stephen, I was keeping a spreadsheet to just track my word count. I was under the impression that if my word count was high, it showed I was sticking to a daily writing schedule. It just didn’t work for me. It stressed me out when my word count was low! 😀

The 500 word stories were indeed for a weekly flash fiction challenge I was part of last year. I loved those challenges because they taught me brevity – something I still am in need of. The way I work is to write it all out, and then keep tossing aside superfluous layers, trying to get to the heart of the story.

Congrats on giving up drinking! You’re a better man that I am! I know if I gave up the nightly glass of wine I would be more energetic and would probably lose a couple of pounds during the year. I’m not ready to go there yet! 😀

  5. WHAT A CUTE DOG! 🙂 I love your “I’m a writer not an accountant” statement! That’s a good way to view things. As for my own resolutions, I’m off to a late start… I’m still getting over the nasty sinus thing I got over Christmas, so I’ve not felt up to stepping on the treadmill or giving up the cookies, or even writing more than a few pages at a time just yet… But SOON! 🙂 I’m hopeful things will happen soon. 😀 Best of luck with yours! ❤

    • Kate Loveton says:

Hi Rachel! I’d like to tell you that sweet pup in the photo is one of mine, but alas he is not. I believe I have posted a picture or two of my dachsies here before, but perhaps I’ll include another picture of them in a future post. I have a white, silver and black long-haired dachshund with blue eyes. She knows she’s special – and is quite obnoxious about her privileges. 😀

I hope you’re feeling better now.

      • Aww, I;d love to see photos of your babies. 🙂 No, my throat was really sore again today… unfortunately with all the hot and cold weather fluctuation we’ve been getting, my sinuses are suffering. 😦

  6. I was pulling for the Ravens tonight…I’m not a New England fan. The Ravens put up a good fight.
I’ve never been a fan of resolutions, Kate. Focus on one thing you’d like to accomplish and go from there.
    Enjoy your weekend!

    • Kate Loveton says:

Hi Jill. Thank you for rooting for my Ravens! I think they gave the Patriots a good run for their money – we made them work for their win.

I like your philosophy about focusing on one thing you’d like to accomplish. It’s manageable and it gives one something to strive for. 🙂

  7. Cassandra says:

    After watching the very first Superbowl of my whole life on TV last year, and because our hostess of the party we were at was a die hard fan, our family, by default became dedicated and loyal fans of the Sea Horses. At least that’s what we called them until our hostess discreetly corrected us and told us their REAL name was the SeaHawks. {{See what big football folks WE are 😉 }}

I’m slow…it’s the tenth and I’m just now getting around to the piece on resolutions and new years and all that come with them. My kids and my laundry have slowed me down some this week so haven’t had a chance.

First on my Saturday task list though, was getting a certain eBook to a certain blogger and if you check your yahoo account listed here on WP, you should have it in your inbox 🙂

    Happy Weekend!

P.S. Oh! Excited about the Goodreads! I’ll look for ya! Just starting to use it in the past few months.

    • Kate Loveton says:

I’m rooting for the ‘Sea Horses’ to win the Super Bowl this year. Crossing my fingers. 🙂

I’m rather impassioned about football. I suspect it is because I live in an area of the country where we are all obsessed with the sport. On Fridays, everyone – regardless of team loyalty – wears their football jerseys to work. (My jersey is a Ravens #5 for Joe Flacco.) It’s great fun. Every Monday morning, we all gather at work in various huddles for the first few minutes of the day and rehash the Sunday games.

I’m equally passionate about baseball. I can’t wait to pull out my Baltimore Orioles tee-shirts. “Let’s play ball!” 😀

  8. smkay70 says:

I love the photo of your Doxie in the snow, so cute! I have decided to quit grain and sugar. I just got a treadmill. My dog doesn’t want to use it, I found. Hehe. Right now I am having cravings that make me want to rob a bakery. I will look you up on Goodreads, and am hoping to join a reading challenge myself!

    • Kate Loveton says:

Oh gosh, I wish that sweet pup was mine, but the picture is from a BBC weather channel. 🙂 My own dachshunds are equally cute, however. I will post a picture of them soon.

Your remark about your dog not wanting to use the treadmill made me laugh! Didn’t he like his Christmas present? 😉

  9. reocochran says:

I love dogs in snow, they are so playful! Children seem to be very happy in the cold, as my six grandkids delight in all of it, including no school days! smiles
I liked how you mentioned word count and also, resolutions. I admire your reading 40 books in a year, I may do this but mine are usually silly detective books, not great or grand novels… So, here’s to another year and wishing you great cheer,I shall join you with a light beer!

    • Kate Loveton says:

Hi there! Regarding the books you read, I will tell you truthfully that I like to mix my books up. I like ‘silly’ detective novels very much! I like to go from genre to genre – makes it fun and keeps it interesting for me. I like detective novels, horror, science fiction, crime procedurals, ‘fine’ literature – and even the occasional romance if there’s a great story behind it. I’m just hooked on books!

Thanks for commenting, friend. Happy New Year. 🙂

  10. weight2lose2013 says:

I get harrassed from one of my friends for drinking light beer. The Ravens…..hmmm…..my team (Chargers) choked away a chance to play this weekend and I’m still stinging from the loss to the Chiefs. Best of luck today against the Pats (my home town team, but not my team!). Thanks for the follow and I look forward to following your blog as well.

    Rob

    • Kate Loveton says:

Well, Rob, when you’ve dropped a couple of pounds from drinking lite beer, you can harass your pals! 😀

San Diego is a good team- maybe next year, hey?

Guess you and I have one thing in common with both the Chargers and the Ravens: we’ll be watching those darned Pats playing in yet another Super Bowl! Go Seahawks! 😀

  11. noelleg44 says:

What a cute picture of your dog! Ours won’t walk on the snow – she picks her way around under the eaves! Hardly a Wednesday whine – just your usual perceptive comments on how things are. Resolutions are useless as far as I’m concerned. No one ever keeps them, myself included! I usually make changes mid-year!

    • Kate Loveton says:

That’s what I like about you, Noelle: you march to your own drummer! 😀 Resolutions mid year – a great idea!

Hope Rhe Brewster II is on the horizon. I look forward to reviewing the book and – of course – reading about her adventures. I think you need to name a future pet ‘Rhe’ in honor of your resourceful heroine!

  12. macjam47 says:

We’ve just had a light snow here in SW Ohio, but we sure do have frigid weather. My first resolution to break this year was not to complain about the weather. Sub-zero took care of that one. You have a great blog and I am loving your Wednesday Whine. My list of books I hope to get through in 2015 is ridiculously long, but I love reading and blogging. My youngest son and daughter-in-law used to live in Baltimore so I would have happily said “Go Ravens”, but my oldest son and his family live in Boston. My grandsons wouldn’t forgive me if I did’t say, ‘Go Pats”. 🙂 Best of luck keeping your remaining resolutions.

    • Kate Loveton says:

Hello! Hey, I’m complaining enough about the weather for the both of us! My husband tells me there’s a chance of a significant snow storm coming our way Saturday into Sunday morning. Oh nooo! 😀

So you’re from Ohio… not a Bengals or a Browns fan, then? How about Ohio State? See how obsessed I am with football? It’s a sickness… 😉

Since you’re from Ohio, I must ask: have you ever read ‘And Ladies of the Club’ by Helen Hooven Santmyer? The action takes place post Civil War in Waynesboro, Ohio. I’ve always liked that book.

Thanks for your kind words about my blog! I’m glad you’re enjoying it!

  13. Mark Gardner says:

I grew up in Pittsburgh, so I think I’m still contractually obligated to be a Steelers fan, but soon I will have lived in Arizona longer than I’ve lived in the ‘burgh. I’ll have to review my contracts to see what regional sports team I’m supposed to root for.

  14. I stopped making resolutions a long time ago. I up the paralell bar a smidge every year and move forward that way. I have enough stress in my life to add more. 😀
About exercise, I’m to start walking with a friend. So far, friend hasn’t had time. Neither have I this week. Appointments every day. Sigh. See, I’m off to a good start. ^^’
    Happy New Year, Kate. ❤

  15. Resolutions always seem to get broken, so I can see why people stop making them! 😀 Instead, I made goals for myself this year, achievable ones!

Hope you had a great start to the New Year!

  16. I don’t like snow. It’s cold. I don’t like cold.
As for resolutions; I don’t. I don’t like breaking promises, even to myself. Especially to myself.
I have plans, targets, aspirations, and the biggest stock of get-out clauses and fall-back positions you’ve ever seen.
Have a great year, Kate. Achieve what you want to achieve and those things you hope to achieve but can’t; don’t sweat it – there’s always 2016.

    • Kate Loveton says:

Oh, Keith… we have been below freezing temps quite a bit this January. I’m with you: I don’t like snow or cold. One day I’ll figure out why I moved to Pennsylvania instead of South Carolina!

Your comment about ‘get-out clauses and fall-back positions’ made me grin! Can I buy a couple? 😀

  17. Hot and humid down here in sunny Wollongong, 90 minutes south of Sydney (Australia). I have been keeping a low profile while I work through what I sincerely hope is the very last edit of my upcoming, first-ever book. Due for publication in July this year, it has come back from the copy-editor covered in pencil marks. Luckily for me, 75% of them are to have the format conform to the publisher’s style guide. Anyway, I hope the day will come that you can review it for me!

  18. W. K. Tucker says:

Kate, have you ever witnessed a cat picking its way through a snow-covered yard? Hilarious, to say the least. Pick one foot up, shake it off, pick up next foot, shake. And so on, and so on.
No snow so far down here in my part of Arkansas, and I hope it stays that way. Give me that lovely, warm, sunshiny beach any day of the week. And a cold Bahama Mama to go with it. 😊

    • Kate Loveton says:

Cats are so particular! I love that about them. I can just imagine the little princess carefully picking her way through the snow (or a little prince, for that matter). Not so with my dogs. They are like silly, bumbling comedians – the three stooges in fur! They just barrel out the door and right into the snow drifts. (A snow drift for a dachshund is about 12 inches! 😀 )

I’m with you: where’s the beach? where’s the palm tree? where’s the Bahama Mama?

      Sigh… beach dreaming on such a wintry day… 🙂

  19. Helen Espinosa says:

I should probably just straight up admit I’m a Cowboys fan, even though I’ve been fighting it for years; but it’s hard not to be when my kids are. I always root for the Ravens when they play the Steelers or the Patriots, so yeah. Go Ravens! Good luck in the New Year in all your endeavors! 😉
